We’ve been writing about it for months and now it’s finally arrived. Last night we received our first round of mobile-first index notifications for Australian (.au) domains.

While the first batch of these notifications went out in April, this is the first time we’ve received notifications for the hundreds of different Australian domains we work with. Learn more about Google’s first notification roll-out here.

This is a screenshot of one of the notifications we’ve received:

Google has previously said that they are in the process of migrating websites “that follow the best practices for mobile-indexing” – and this notification appears to reflect that.

If you’re wondering how to best prepare your site for the mobile-first index, consult this checklist:

  1. 1. Confirm your website passes Google’s mobile-friendly test.
  2. 2. Ensure your page load speed is optimised for mobile devices.
  3. 3. Check that content and internal links on the mobile version of your website align closely with the desktop version.
